Digital workflow modalities are revolutionizing the field of dentistry. Digital dentistry allows for planning the whole treatment and actually treating the patient using fully digital workflows. For instance, instead of using expensive impression materials, patients can have their dental arches scanned by means of an intraoral scanner, from which restorations and other treatment devices can be digitally designed and either 3D-printed or milled by using CAD-CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technologies.

With such technologic methodologies, a three-dimensional (3D) virtual patient can be created for diagnosing and simulating an entire treatment plan noninvasively. Furthermore, digital workflow allows for sharing treatment plan data immediately with other professionals via network- communication tools. These, in turn, help achieving the patient expectations.

The programme teaches the theoretical and scientific foundation of the field of digital dentistry, and will also become skillful in clinical and laboratorial practice within the professional environment of the teaching clinics.

In this program, you will be exposed to the theoretical and scientific foundation of the field of digital dentistry, and also become skilful in clinical and laboratorial practice within the professional environment of the teaching clinics, in a timely and structured manner as follows:

1st year: The first year will provide you with introductory knowledge on digital dentistry. This stage will lay down the foundations required for clinical practice. In parallel, you will perform a prosthetically-driven treatment plan and its respective clinical execution. Clinical treatment will be provided in a dental clinic set-up. 2nd year: You will further develop intellectually by receiving in-depth knowledge focused on specific areas of digital dentistry. You will further engage in the review of literature related to digital dentistry and associated disciplines. The second year will provide the foundations for the research project by the delivery of research methodology and submission of a research proposal.

On the practical front, you will further engage in the management of patients in traditional clinical settings as well as providing digital domiciliary services in diverse settings. The latter will allow you to further develop your clinical skills.

In parallel, such final year of the course will be also dedicated to a research project. On the clinic front, you will consolidate your skills by refining your intellectual and clinical proficiency so as to allow you to seek direct employment after completion of your studies.

The Degree of Master of Dental Surgery awarded from July 2018 onwards or the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery obtained with at least Second Class Honours or better, if awarded prior to July 2018.

The admission of applicants may be made conditional on the result of an interview.

The Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee, may admit into the Course applicants not in possession of a first cycle degree, if it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and a minimum of ten years' documented professional experience, that together are deemed to be comparable to the qualification indicated above. Such applicants shall be required to demonstrate the learning achieved through prior experience and qualifications through the evaluation procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL). The admission of applicants referred to in this paragraph, may be made subject to those conditions that the Faculty Admissions Committee may impose to address any lacunae in the applicants' academic preparation. Conditions imposed may include the satisfactory completion of a preparatory programme, or the requirement to follow and pass supplementary study-units, up to a maximum of 12 ECTS credits, in addition to the programme of study.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 2 students.

Prior to enrolling for the Course, accepted applicants are required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

Requirement for successful completion of Year 2: 60 ECTS credits. Requirement for the award of Master of Science in Digital Dentistry (Dental Surgery): 120 ECTS credits.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Science in Digital Dentistry - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Define concepts of digital medical imaging.
Image-obtaining methods in digital dentistry. Those include high and low field-of-view CBCT, intra- and extraoral scanners.
Name file types (e.g. DICOM, STL and OBJ), software types and reproduce data manipulation.
Define digital workflow in prosthodontics/restorative dentistry. Explain and demonstrate the workflow extending from the intraoral scanning of teeth preparations, virtual wax-up in software, milling and 3D-printing of prostheses for subsequent installation in the patient.
Define digital workflow in periodontics/implant dentistry. Describe and perform CAD-CAM surgical guide s for crown lengthening, 3D planning of bone grafts and dental implants with surgical guides, virtual wax-up and fabrication of implant-supported prosthesis.
Define digital workflow in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Describe and perform 3D planning with CAD-CAM for reconstructive, trauma and orthognathic surgeries.

Subject Knowledge and Understanding:

Define concepts of digital medical imaging. Those include the different types of files, software systems, devices (e.g. CT, CBCT, MRI, etc.) and applications of digital imaging in medicine and dentistry (e.g. Volumetric diagnosis, pixel value analysis, integrated treatment planning, etc.)
Image-obtaining methods in digital dentistry. Those include high and low field-of-view CBCT, intraand extraoral scanners.
Name file types (e.g. DICOM, STL and OBJ), software types (i.e. DICOM viewers, implant planning software, computer-aided design software and Digital smile Design) and reproduce data manipulation (exporting, importing, superimposing and editing files for digitally design dental devices such as prostheses and surgical guides).
Define digital workflow in prosthodontics/restorative dentistry. Explain and demonstrate the workflow extending from the intraoral scanning of teeth preparations, virtual wax-up in software, milling and 3D-printing of prostheses for subsequent installation in the patient.
Define digital workflow in periodontics/implant dentistry. Describe and perform CAD-CAM surgical guides for crown lengthening, 3D planning of bone grafts and dental implants with surgical guides, virtual wax-up and fabrication of implant-supported prosthesis.
Define digital workflow in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Describe and perform 3D planning with CAD-CAM for reconstructive, trauma and orthognathic surgeries.
Define digital workflow in endodontics. Describe the use of CAD-CAM endodontic guides and related digital radiographic methods.
Define digital workflow in orthodontics. Describe the use of CAD-CAM guides for orthodontic brackets and the use of orthodontic aligners.
Reproduce and create scientific and clinical research procedures in digital dentistry using evidence-based methodology.

Intellectual Development:

Identify and explain the benefits and challenges of digital dentistry for patient care.
Identify and appraise the current limitations to oral health regarding treatment planning and managing patients.
Create and consolidate educational teaching skills by exposing them to undergraduate teaching.
Explain the multidisciplinary approach to working with digital dentistry.
Create a professional identity as an oral health professional to effectively work within an interdisciplinary team and envisage the constant technological development.
Identify relevant policy- and service-related issues in supporting and caring for patients when using digital methodologies.

Key Transferable Skills:

Demonstrate soft skills by interacting within a multidisciplinary team providing care using digital dentistry. These skills will be transferable to the population at large throughout the student's professional career.
Demonstrate research skills to investigate issues within this field.
Apply professionalism based on ethical standards and expectations in digital dentistry
Demonstrate technological and working skills to perform intra and extraoral scanning of patients, as well as computer-aided design (CAD) of dental devices (e.g. prostheses, surgical guides, occlusal splints, orthodontic aligners) with different software systems.
Demonstrate technological and working skills to perform computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) of the digitally designed dental devices with different milling devices and 3D-printers.
Apply clinical skills to treat the patients using the above-mentioned CAD-CAM methodologies, from obtaining the diagnosis and adequate treatment planning to executing the treatment and following-up each case in an individual basis.

Other skills related relevant to employability and personal development:

Employ the above-mentioned skills to consolidate the development of a professional individual that will lead to employability within the public and private sector in our country and abroad.
Apply and combine the above-mentioned skills to teach undergraduate students will likewise prepare students with skills to a future academic career in the field.
